New Weddington's State Collection of Artefacts is delighted to have obtained an original visiting card (carte de visite) of Mr Henry Cunliffe Shawe from the 1870s using the albumin print technique. Mr Shawe was one of the last Castle owners and Lords of the Manor in the original Weddington estate before the title lapsed.
Each photograph was the size of a visiting card (6.5 x 10.5cm), and such photograph cards were commonly traded among friends and visitors in the 1860/70s. Albums for the collection and display of cards became a common fixture in Victorian parlours.
