John Brookes, aka Lord Watitune of the New Weddington Isles, is honoured and delighted to have been granted the 2020 Volunteer Leadership Award by ACT (Canberra) Volunteering.
Many of the activities listed in the citation below tie in with community arts ventures undertaken through the New Weddington Department of Culture, Arts and Media and demonstrate not only the community focused ethos of the Isles but also how micronational activity can have a tangible and positive effect on local communities during times of crisis.
CITATION: "Quite honestly, it’s going to be hard to touch on everything John has done to achieve the 2020 Volunteer Leadership Award. John has lived a life of community service, having spent over 25 years working in the charity sector. Leadership is about sharing knowledge and John has been able to contribute his expertise to create websites and digital content that have increased the reach and impact of several organisations. This includes developing a website and online consumer forum for Perinatal Wellbeing Centre, an organisation supporting perinatal mental wellbeing; developing an e-newsletter for the Victims of Crime Assistance League; and through ongoing volunteer work with the ACT Mental Health Consumer Network. Most recently, John has set up a voluntary group developing the use of arts as a recovery and self-empowerment tool for those living with a disability; and has also joined the Emergency Volunteer Response Team in Canberra, assisting those affected by bushfires to process their claims. We are thrilled to recognise your contribution. Congratulations John."
