New and unclaimed island recently discovered by accident on a scientific expedition.

If any micronations are seeking landed territory there is a new - as yet unclaimed - island recently discovered by accident on a scientific expedition. According to media giant Reuters "Scientists last month set foot on a tiny island off the coast of Greenland which they say is the world's northernmost point of land and was revealed by shifting pack ice."

The Kingdom of Denmark - of which Greenland is a territory - have stated they have no intention of claiming the island, although theoretically the US, Russia and Canada may take an interest if fishing stocks in the area make it worthwhile... so get in quick!

Signs of Renewal in the New Weddington Communal Gardens

The first sparse, tentative, blossoms are appearing in the New Weddington Isles Communal Garden, a part of our Prime Consul grounds ex aliena. As well as signalling the coming of spring here after a long, cold winter; this reminds us that light follows dark, hope follows despair, joy follows sorrow and renewal follows death.

That such a cycle of life – one that has persisted throughout history despite pandemics, war, natural disaster and famine - can be encapsulated in a small, fragile, yet beautiful and enduring flower; is something, no matter how minor, to take comfort in.

New Addition to State Collection of Artefacts nears Completion

You may recall a few months have passed since we announced a specially commissioned “New Weddington” – themed Chess Set to add to our historic items in our State Collection of Artefacts.

The set is close to completion, with the board and unique chess pieces completed. We are, however, just waiting on the specially ordered marble / onyx chess piece bases. Unfortunately the original supplier of these failed to deliver them, and they remain in limbo somewhere in China.

Our Department of Arts and Culture have now identified new suppliers closer to home and, Covid delays allowing, we hope to receive these by September with the set being completed by our Creative Designer Lady Katherine Revell; who also fashions our bespoke ceremonial medals.

We look forward to unveiling the completed set – along with the story and meaning behind each piece – very soon.

The New Weddington Isles is a member of the Commonwealth's People's Forum which inputs into The Commonwealth and is the single largest opportunity for civil society to engage with Commonwealth leaders on global development issues. Membership is open to NGOs, civil society groups, relevant individuals and micronational entities!

New Weddington Expeditionary Program. Update: New Satellite images of the Isles

One of the main goals of our “The New Weddington Expeditionary Program” is to search the area in the general co-ordinates logged in historic sightings of the Royal Company's Islands, unclaimed territories in the Indian Ocean currently listed as 'phantom isles' and now claimed as The New Weddington Isles.

For this we have been accessing several existing commercial satellites - via a link up to the New Weddington Isles' Prime Consul ex aliena in Canberra - that track over the area from latitude 51°20′S 143°93′E to 50°87′S 144°50′E.

As the area is prone to cloud cover this project went back to 2003 in a bid to gain a tantalising glimpse of the Isles we claim. The key provider of this data is NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) which provides the capability to interactively browse over 900 global, full-resolution satellite imagery layers and then download the underlying data. We caught our first glimpse of the Isles in this area back in May (see previous blog post).

We have logged several times periods with gaps in cloud cover and, whilst it still covers some of the area, are delighted to release the latest imagery of the Isles taken on 13 August 2021.

Unfortunately we have been unable to cross match the EOSDIS satellite image to higher resolution imagery from the Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 as previously - as the feed to Landsat is temporarily offline - but we continue to monitor the satellite images. Time consuming and laborious; but we will post a full gallery on our website soon.

Whilst, realistically, setting foot on and ultimately establishing a presence on this unexplored land remains a medium to long term – but key - aim, the Expeditionary Program also covers some exciting land-based exploration projects – including an ascent to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko; Australia’s highest peak, in partnership with the Principality of Sealand later this year.
