New Weddington Warriors Cricket team win hard fought game to lift the 2021 BBL Season Trophy!

The New Weddington Isles ”Warriors” Big Bash Twenty20 Cricket Team, battled through a hard fought Finals game to lift the BBL10 Trophy at their first attempt today.

The Warriors were up against long term leaders of the Virtual KFC SuperCoach fantasy cricket league, “No run” so it was always going to be a big ask of the newcomers. However, they clung on in a nail-biting match, affected by injury and rain delays, often trailing “No run” by just 2 or 3 points.

After play resumed with a revised figure of 18 overs for the second half, the Warriors began to slowly claw their way back, overtaking No run and leading by 5 points for several overs until an impressive late surge put the win beyond doubt with a final tally of 407 points to No Run’s 349.

Lord Watitune, speaking on behalf of the New Weddington Isles Department of Arts, Culture and Sport said: “We are delighted with this momentous result – whilst reaching the Finals stages at the first time of asking was impressive enough, to win the league and lift the Trophy is a testament to the spirit of the New Weddington Isles and our sporting and national aspirations.

“Whilst our Cricket team now takes a well-earned break, we turn our focus to our other online sporting ventures, with fantasy coach teams competing in Aussie Rules Football – our women’s team have already commenced their league with the men’s league starting in March – and, later in the year, the English Premier Soccer League. We are also looking at macronational sporting and cultural opportunities through sponsorship and grants applications – we are in early stages of discussion in sponsoring a local Roller Derby League, of which more soon.

“We look forward to similar success in the sporting ventures, whilst – in recognition of this historic win – I today decree Cricket as the Official National Sport of the New Weddington Isles. This is a particularly fitting accolade as the history of Cricket goes back to the days of “Old Weddington” over 100 years ago.

“Of course, nation-building – especially progressing our claims on the former Royal Company’s Isles – remains our key priority; but elements such as arts, culture and sports are invaluable in building a sense of national identity and pride above and beyond the business of politics, finance and state matters. The New Weddington Warriors Cricket Team can certainly be seen to have demonstrated that today.”
