Following a mid-season dip in fortunes, the New Weddington Isles' "Warriors" Big Bash League 20/20 Cricket Team has made a late surge to book a place in the FINALS round at the tail end of the season.
Lord Watitune, Lord of the Manor of the New Weddington Isles, said of the achievement: "As a micronation, The New Weddington Isles encompasses all of the key functions of government - from Constitutional and Legal matters, Citizenship, Finance, Foreign Affairs and Diplomacy and, of course, pursuit of our land claims to the former Royal Company Islands in the Indian Ocean.
"However, we believe that a nation's culture is equally important in defining a country - and that is why we also maintain a robust presence in the Arts, Culture and Sports sectors. In sports we now have viable teams in several 'virtual' leagues in the arenas of Cricket (the Twenty20 Australian Big Bash League), the English Premier Soccer League and the AFL (Aussie Rules Football) league, featuring the men's and women's teams.
"In our inaugural season, and amid the upheaval of the coronavirus, I am delighted to announce that the New Weddington Warriors BBL Cricket team have successfully negotiated the 13 head to head rounds and have reached the Knockout stage - just 2 games away from the FINAL. We wish all the best to our cricking Warriors and congratulate them on reaching this stage - a success in itself."
The Warriors now have a much needed break before the Knockout round on 29th January, and you can check back here for all the latest updates. You can see a video explaining how the BBL Finals rounds work here - beware, it's not simple!!
Meantime, the Isles' Department of Arts, Culture & Sports is keeping busy with the start of a Covid-restructured AFL Women's league for 2021 commencing tomorrow 28th... head on over to our AFL Sports News page for details.
