New Weddington Warriors Cricket team win hard fought game to lift the 2021 BBL Season Trophy!

The New Weddington Isles ”Warriors” Big Bash Twenty20 Cricket Team, battled through a hard fought Finals game to lift the BBL10 Trophy at their first attempt today.

The Warriors were up against long term leaders of the Virtual KFC SuperCoach fantasy cricket league, “No run” so it was always going to be a big ask of the newcomers. However, they clung on in a nail-biting match, affected by injury and rain delays, often trailing “No run” by just 2 or 3 points.

After play resumed with a revised figure of 18 overs for the second half, the Warriors began to slowly claw their way back, overtaking No run and leading by 5 points for several overs until an impressive late surge put the win beyond doubt with a final tally of 407 points to No Run’s 349.

Lord Watitune, speaking on behalf of the New Weddington Isles Department of Arts, Culture and Sport said: “We are delighted with this momentous result – whilst reaching the Finals stages at the first time of asking was impressive enough, to win the league and lift the Trophy is a testament to the spirit of the New Weddington Isles and our sporting and national aspirations.

“Whilst our Cricket team now takes a well-earned break, we turn our focus to our other online sporting ventures, with fantasy coach teams competing in Aussie Rules Football – our women’s team have already commenced their league with the men’s league starting in March – and, later in the year, the English Premier Soccer League. We are also looking at macronational sporting and cultural opportunities through sponsorship and grants applications – we are in early stages of discussion in sponsoring a local Roller Derby League, of which more soon.

“We look forward to similar success in the sporting ventures, whilst – in recognition of this historic win – I today decree Cricket as the Official National Sport of the New Weddington Isles. This is a particularly fitting accolade as the history of Cricket goes back to the days of “Old Weddington” over 100 years ago.

“Of course, nation-building – especially progressing our claims on the former Royal Company’s Isles – remains our key priority; but elements such as arts, culture and sports are invaluable in building a sense of national identity and pride above and beyond the business of politics, finance and state matters. The New Weddington Warriors Cricket Team can certainly be seen to have demonstrated that today.”

Convincing win for New Weddington Warriors in Qualifiers but a Tough Task Awaits in BBL Finals...

New Weddington Warriors’ Twenty20 cricket team had a resounding victory against Figgy Bandits to bag a spot in the BBL SuperCoach Finals, winning by 492 points to a lacklustre 61.

Their FINALS match on 4th February looks to be a much more challenging affair against league leaders No Run, who currently have a projected score above that of the Warriors.

New Weddington will be looking to make use of the unlimited transfers for this round to boost their team and make history in the nation’s sports by winning the Trophy at the first attempt. Lord Watitune said of the team: “As well as the finances, politics and diplomatic elements of New Weddington, we strongly believe that culture, arts and sports are just as important in defining a sense of national identity and inclusion.

“Whilst we eagerly await the start of our online AFL men’s and EPL (English Premier League) soccer later this year; along with the ongoing AFL Women’s team, we should acknowledge the success of the BBL team in the New Weddington Warriors sports family. Whatever the outcome of the finals, they are already winners in our eyes in progressing so far, so convincingly, in their first season.

“On a personal level, I look forward to planned initiatives that will look to bring the New Weddington Warriors into the macro-world through potential sponsorship and naming rights; as well as developing our culture and arts initiatives, including representation in microgovernment events such as the Australian Government Multicultural Festival and Parade, and formalisation of our Arts department through local and national exhibitions, and online galleries.

“All of this will occur along with the development of the New Weddington Isles government as a viable and vibrant micronation, and we wholeheartedly invite others to join our journey by becoming a subject of the realm – more here.”
