There was heartbreak on Sunday as the Warriors – who had battled back from mid-table mundanity, to reach the Australian Rules Football Semi-Finals; crashed out with a scoring collapse and elimination at the hands of ‘Richies Wolves’ losing by 1709 to 1942. Whilst it was an unexpected loss – the Warriors had a projected score of 2080 going into the weekend – a spokesperson for the Isles Sports Department was putting a brave face on it:
“Whilst the semi-final loss and, arguably, much of the season was disappointing; we shouldn’t ignore the fact that we reached the semi-finals in a league of 17 at the first time of asking. At the end of the day, you can have the best strategy in the world but if players underperform on the pitch it can be brutal, as we saw tonight.
“That said, we have learned a lot and will be taking these lessons forward to next year’s AFL, when we will be fielding both men’s and women’s teams.
“And if there is a silver lining, we at least can now focus fully on the MicroNations League Cup [an online virtual football manager competition based on the English Premier Soccer League and made up exclusively of Micronational squads]. We are pleased with the first round of the season – also last weekend – which sees us in joint 2nd place; although of course it’s early days!”
Entry to the MicroNations League Cup is still open to interested participants – check out the dedicated Facebook group for more information here.
