|The New Weddington Isles||
The Renewal Day Medal is an award conferred by Lord Watitune every 30th March to mark the the Isles’ Renewal Day, when the micronation’s claim to the former Royal Company’s Islands were officially established de facto by the International Hydrographic Organisation. You can see more on this in the History of the New Weddington Isles. This year's recipient is Frei (see right).
As well as other activities, the awarding of the medal will be an annual event, going to a micronation, entity or individual who has shown particular support of the Isles, and has demonstrated an alignment in the wider micronational community. 2021 is special as it is our inaugural awarding of this honour. Images of the Medal are attached and will be announced on 30th March.
The medal comes with Letters of Safe Conduct of a lifetime duration; and the holder is eligible to style themselves as recipient of the New Weddington Renewal Day Medal 2021 among their honorifics.
We would like to congratulate Frei on this honour and look forward to many more years of mutual interaction in the future.
The Renewal Day medal is a specially commissioned by Lady Katherine Revill, a reknowned steampunk designer.
The Renewal Day Medal 2021 is highly symbolic – the ribbon bears the green and blue of the New Weddington Isles, representing the green history of old Weddington and the blue of its new ocean setting. the cogs represent industry and rebuilding whilst the sea creature again refers to the ocean setting of New Weddington.
The Medal bears the Isles' Official National Animal - the seven-arm octopus (Haliphron atlanticus). Whilst this may look like a mythical creature it is an actual species - native to the oceans around the area of the New Weddington Isles. It represents the Isles' sea setting along with its uniqueness and its commitment to diversity in all of its forms.
A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF LADY KATHERINE REVILL, RENEWAL DAY MEDAL DESIGNER
“Born and raised in the splendid simplicity of the north east, Lady Katherine moved in her mid twenties to the bustling mechanical heart of Britain, London, to study costume design at Wimbledon School of Art.
“Here, while studying the elegant art form of fashionable aesthetics, she was introduced to what would become her true calling in life, exploration. a fellow student happened across a mythological story of creators that inhabited the common lands surrounding the school that supposedly hauled riches of uncountable wealth underground, and had an insatiable addiction to tea. these ‘wombles’ as they would later become to be known, would spark a life-long obsession with mythological stories, treasure hunting and exploration.
“Armed with her insatiable appetite for adventure, and a rather large collection of exquisite petticoats, she set out to explore lost cities, search for new worlds, battle mythological creatures, and potentially discover the answer to life’s most important question... what is the optimal amount of time to dunk your biscuit?”
The recipient of the 2021 Renewal Day Medal is His Serene Highness, Prince FREJ VON FRÄÄHSEN ZU LORENZBURG of the Principality of Lorenzburg. In his own words:
"I am Freï von Fräähsen zu Lorenzburg. Originally I trained as a choreographer and performance artist, but I woke one morning thinking it was time to try something else in life. I have always loved working with people so it was an easy choice to become a Prince. However, it’s not the Prince’s job to boss people around. Instead I, as Prince of Lorenzburg, aim to be a sparkling and affirming camp fire that signals: “Come, sit here for a while. Come, share your own story”.
"Man cannot live by bread alone!
"It is my firm belief that people need myth and meaning in order to live fully. We also need freedom, companionship, pleasure, drive and opportunities to self-expression. Bread may satisfy the stomach but the hunger for life, how can it be fed? I myself was brought up on a nutritious diet of hearty food, live roleplaying, fantasy books and the proximity to nature. For me, growing up in Lorenzburg was a magical experience. I have love for the place, and that love is an inner compass needle which points towards Lorenzburg even when I travel around the world. Lorenzburg may be disguised temporary as a seemingly mundane residential area in the city of Karlstad, but I see deeper than that. I can see the magic just underneath the surface. I can feel the presence of a magical realm that slumbers in the midst of everyday life. My task, as the Prince, is to invite you to contribute your very person, your unique magic and your story. That is how we collaborate to transform the city section Lorensberg into the enchanted Lorenzburg!"
The Prince is true to his word, and has been a long time friend - and sometimes - mentor - to the New Weddington Isles since its inception.
"The New Weddington Isles wholeheartedly endorse this initiative and look forward to many more fruitful years of our new illustrious nations working together in our common goals". Lord Watitune.
